this is a great team. jj and kai winding are a perfect match. this could be the start of something big is a great opening track. the bonus set of kai winding added on makes it an excellent kerbfagulsranecksaficopamubunto.coinfo you get just one trombone album then get this one/5(35).
This lively Impulse! set was the first recorded reunion of trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding. With pianist Bill Evans, either Paul Chambers or Tommy Williams on bass, and Roy Haynes or Art Taylor on drums, the two trombonists are in melodic and witty form on such tunes as "This Could Be the Start of Something Big," "Blue Monk," "Side by Side," and "Theme from Picnic.".
Recorded in a single session, this edition of the J.J. Johnson/Kai Winding group -- otherwise known as the Jay and Kai Quintet -- was caught on a rare 10" Columbia LP, eventually finding its way into a Mosaic boxed set. In general, Johnson's trombone is heavier in texture and more commanding than the lighter-colored tone of Winding, though the issue is sometimes minimized when one or both use.
The great J.J. Johnson probably wins the trombone battle, but Kai Winding is an excellent trombonist in his own right, and his contributions should not be discounted. I did think that a couple of his solos were a bit too formulaic in spots, but that was probably the only negative comment I could .
Impulse!'s first release (February , and part of a 'wave' of four, A-1 to A-4) was producer Creed Taylor's idea to revive J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding's mid-fifties twin-trombone quintet/5().
