Like much of Odetta's early work, Ballads and Blues combines traditional songs (e.g. spirituals) with blues covers. Some songs on this album were also recorded for Odetta & Larry's album The Tin Angel.. ODETTA Vinyl Records and CDs: Odetta Gordon was born on Dec 31, in Birmingham, Alabama. She was the first African-American political folk singer and influenced many other folkie-come-lately musicians of that era. In her post adolescence, Odetta switched from classical voice training to folk by teaching herself how to play the guitar.
On this CD, originally issued as an LP in , the great folksinger Odetta, who in that day hung out with Harry Belafonte and performed the songs of Dylan, Guthrie and other folk/protest composers, got with jazz producer Orrin Keepnews to make a blues record for the Riverside label, which was famous for jazz and lesser-known for folk releases/5(22).
A moderate disappointment, this LP showcases the very early, and somewhat tentative Odetta. A transfer of her first LP, this 16 song disc provides a look at someone who would become a truly great singer and guitarist, but has not yet achieved that.
